PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - The last time cat-owner Kelly Levy saw her tiger-striped feline was before she took her husband to the airport. The 24-year-old came back to her house late Friday to find the bottom step, where Gracie Mae would usually be waiting, empty.
Levy tore the house apart looking for the 10-month-old tabby who had been spayed just days before. She and her dad took out bathroom tiles and part of a cabinet to check a crawl space and papered the neighborhood with "lost cat" signs.
Then she got a phone call.
"Hi, you're not going to believe this, but I am calling from Fort Worth, Texas, and I accidentally picked up your husband's luggage. And when I opened the luggage, a cat jumped out," Levy recalled the caller saying, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.
Rob Carter, of Fort Worth, told The Dallas Morning News for its online edition Tuesday that he made it home with the suitcase.
"I went to unpack and saw some of the clothes and saw it wasn't my suitcase," Carter said. "I was going to close it, and a kitten jumped out and ran under the bed. I screamed like a little girl."
Carter said that he eventually was able to get the cat to come out from under the bed.
"In the morning, I got close enough to see its collar and the phone number on it," he said. "So I called the number and got a hold of the crying wife of the traveler."
Gracie Mae had crawled into Seth Levy's black suitcase undetected, been put through an X-ray machine, loaded onto an airplane, thrown onto a baggage claim conveyor belt and picked up by a stranger.
Carter delivered Gracie Mae to Seth Levy and the tabby made the 1,300-mile trip home on an $80 plane ticket Sunday night.
Carter said that he considered keeping the cat before he knew she had a home.
"If I couldn't have found a good home, I would have kept it," he said. "We were going to name it Suitcase."

Pet Facts
Weird huh? Is it a real three headed dog? or is this a trick of the eyes? You tell me!
Mutt is short for the word "muttonhead," which was slang for dimwit. Somehow the word was applied to dogs in the 20th century, and then to dogs of mixed breeds.
The phrase "dog days of summer" was originally a reference to the constellations. It refers to the period between July and September, when the "dog star" Sirius rises early with the sun.

Is your dog a spoil brat
Have you spoiled your dog to much that now she or he is spoiled Rotten? If your dog has several dog behavior problems, take your time and commit to solving one problem at a time. Confusing him with multiple things at once will only result in failure, for failure when you otherwise should succeed.
Start with a commitment to make your dog walk properly for a period of thirty minutes each morning. Study different training methods until you find the one that is best for your dog. It is not a matter of "one size fits all."
Remember, a disciplined pet is a happy and obedient one. An unruly pet is no happier with himself than you are. If you love your pet, make him happy with fairness.
Do not over-commit and try to change everything at once. It often becomes overwhelming, and people fail that way. Take it nice and easy. With a case such as this, the goal you must have in mind is to finish the race. You must be patient. Be a winner.
So avoid a spoiled brat dog, or correct obnoxious and disruptive spoiled brat dog behavior, by being firm, fair, and consistent – not caving in to every whim and fancy of the dog. Like a fussy, demanding, whining, spoiled child, when your dog displays brat dog behavior, he is not at all happy. Either you demonstrate leadership and control, or your dog will fill the void in an unacceptable way – which increasingly gets worse. You must and can restore a right relationship with your pet and right order in your home with vital dog obedience training. Source: ezine articles: Rena Murray

Pet fostering for abused women

Women who choose to leave home often worry about their pets
An animal lover is providing foster homes for pets whose owners have been caught up in domestic abuse.
Marian Edwards decided to offer the service after working on the Welsh Women's Aid helpline.
Ms Edwards, from the Nantlle Valley, Gwynedd, now fosters all sorts of animals, although most are dogs.
Welsh Women's Aid said fear for the well-being of children, loved ones and even pets could be a real barrier to leaving an abusive partner.
"I'd heard of people offering this service in different parts of Wales and decided that I'd offer the same service, mostly to dogs," said Ms Edwards.
"It can be a real problem with women unwilling to leave an abusive relationship if it means leaving their pet behind."
Ms Edwards has two dogs herself, a mongrel and West Highland terrier, and takes the foster animal into her home.
The knowledge that their children and pets will be safe can be a huge relief
Elen Pierce, director Welsh Women's Aid
If she is unable to help, she usually knows someone else who can, she added.
"I've just finished looking after two little dogs for three months.
"I don't charge to have them here, but I do ask for a contribution towards their food."
She said the Christmas period was usually quiet, but she expected it to be busier in the new year.
"What tends to happen is that women try and keep things together over Christmas, especially if they have children, it's in January when things tend to come to a head."
Elen Pierce, director of Welsh Women's Aid, said the decision to leave an abusive relationship was not one that a women took lightly.
"Research shows the period where a woman is planning to leave and actually leaving the relationship is the most dangerous and when an escalation in physical violence is most likely to occur," she said.
"Fear for the well-being of children, loved ones and even pets can present a real barrier to exiting an abusive relationship.
"The knowledge that their children and pets will be safe can be a huge relief to women who have lived in fear for so long," she added. Source: K9 news

Foods that are harmful to your Pets
Why are grapes harmful?
As far as grapes and raisins go, no one is sure why they're harmful. It's been confirmed that even grapes grown without fertilizers or pesticides can be toxic to dogs. But not to every dog, and not every time. It's also not known whether small amounts eaten over a long time period could have a cumulative effect.
What we do know is that the end result in nearly all reported cases of grape or raisin toxicity is acute kidney failure. (The term "acute" means that the condition is severe and comes on quickly.) The dog ultimately can't produce urine, which means they can't filter toxins out of their systems -- a process essential to life.
During the twelve-month period in which the effects of grapes were studied, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center handled 140 cases involving one or more dogs. Over a third of the dogs developed symptoms ranging from vomiting to kidney failure, and seven dogs died. The ASPCA based their study on reported cases, so naturally there may be cases where a dogs health is entirely unaffected by eating grapes. But until they know all the facts, the Society advises against feeding pets grapes or raisins in any amount.
An ounce of prevention
So, your dog just scored himself a big box of raisins. What's a pet owner to do?
The first line of defense, if the grapes or raisins were eaten recently, is to induce vomiting and administer activated charcoal (it absorbs toxins in the GI tract). Vomiting is also the first sign that your dog is in trouble, so skip right to the activated charcoal if vomiting has already occurred. (In a pinch you can make your own activated charcoal by charring a piece of toast until it's blackened and crumbles easily.) Then call your vet right away.
Can't reach the vet? Call ASPCA Poison Control: 888-426-4435
The vet will keep your dog on intravenous fluids for at least 48 hours and monitor blood chemistry daily. Normal blood work after 3 days usually means your dog is in the clear.
Keeping a watchful eye out, of course, is the best way to keep your pet out of trouble. Like children, dogs (and other pets) have a knack for getting into mischief when we're not looking.
It's Not Just the Grapes...
There are other foods your dog should be kept away from, and some of them may surprise you.
Here are some other foods that can put a dogs health in harms way:
Chocolate
Who can resist chocolate? Like it your not, your dog. Chocolate is made with cocoa beans and cocoa beans contain a chemical called Theobromine, which is toxic to dogs. So on Valentine's Day, you're actually being kind to your best buddy if you eat all the chocolates yourself! Read my special report on chocolate at http://www.great-dog-gift.com/chocolate to learn more, and see how different types of chocolate have varying effects on dogs health.
Cocoa Mulch
Cocoa bean shells are a by-product of chocolate production (which is how mulch made it into the "foods" category) and are popular as mulch for landscaping. Homeowners like the attractive color and scent, and the fact that the mulch breaks down into an organic fertilizer. However, some dogs like to eat it and it contains Theobromine.
Fatty foods
Fatty foods are hard for a dog to digest and can can overtax the pancreas, leading to pancreatitis. This can threaten your dogs health and is potentially fatal.
Nuts
Macadamia nuts should be avoided. In fact most nuts are not good for a dogs health since their high phosporus content is said to lead to bladder stones.
Mulch
Mulch isn't food, but there's one type tempting enough for dogs to eat. Some dogs are attracted to cocoa mulch, and will eat it in varying quantities. The coca bean shells can contain from 0.2% to 3% theobromine (the toxin ) as compaired to 1-4% in unprocessed beans.
Onions
Onions, especially raw onions, have been shown to trigger hemolytic anemia in dogs. (Stephen J Ettinger, D.V.M and Edward C. Fieldman, D.V.M. 's book: Textbook of Veterinary Internal Medicine vol. 2 pg 1884.) Stay away from onion powder too.
Potatoes
Potato poisonings among people and dogs are rare but have occurred. The toxin, solanine, is poorly absorbed and is only found in green sprouts (these occur in tubers exposed to sunlight) and green potato skins. This explains why incidents seldom occur. Note that cooked, mashed potatoes are fine for a dogs health, actually quite nutritious and digestible.
Artificial Sweeteners
Xylitol is used as a sweetener in many products, especially sugarless gum and candies. Ingesting large amounts of products sweetened with xylitol may cause a sudden drop in blood sugar in dogs, resulting depression, loss of coordination, and seizures. According to Dr. Eric K. Dunayer, a consulting veterinarian in clinical toxicology for the poison control center, "These signs can develop quite rapidly, at times less than 30 minutes after ingestion of the product" states Dr. Dunayer, "...therefore, it is important that pet owners seek veterinary treatment immediately."
Turkey
Turkey skin is currently thought to cause acute pancreatis in dogs, partly due to it's high fat content.
Other foods listed by the ASPCA as harmful:
Alcoholic beverages
Avocado (the only "fatty" member of the vegetable All the foods on this list your dog should avoid because it will cause serious harm.. Lilyruth

Dog to sniff out nightspot drugs
A drug detection dog will be carrying out searches on people queuing to get into nightspots in a Cumbrian town.
The four-legged recruit will target the Barrow area in the run-up to Christmas and anyone caught with drugs will be asked to leave the queue.
They also face being prosecuted for possession and will receive a life-time ban from the premises.
The dog handler will also wear a headcam to record footage which could be used in evidence.
Sergeant Mike O'Hagan said: "The aim of this operation is to disrupt the misuse and sale of illegal drugs at nightspots in Barrow.
"We want people to be responsible, enjoy themselves and respect one another this Christmas."
A sniffer dog will be on duty every Friday and Saturday night throughout the rest of December. BBC news

Stray dogs become marine mascots

The dogs have been trained to spot and bark at approaching Taliban
British troops serving in Afghanistan have adopted two stray dogs as unofficial mascots.
Labradors Charlie and Tangey were taken in by Taunton-based 40 Commando Royal Marines after being found searching for food near their base at Kajaki.
The dogs are now said to be part of the unit, having been trained to spot and bark at approaching Taliban.
Earlier this year, Tangey was captured by the Taliban and tortured with a knife before he managed to escape.
The dogs are now a permanent fixture at Camp Bastian in n Southern Afghanistan where they are used for surveillance on the top of a nearby mountain.
Sgt Major Dave Layton said: "They have become the honorary mascots of the company.
"I don't understand how anyone could do what the Taliban did to Tangey.
"Everyone gets welfare packs from back home and that includes the dogs. They are the celebrities of the base." K9 News

Abseiler saves pet dog from gorge

Abseiler saves pet dog from gorge
Crown had fallen down the gorge while walking with his owner
An abseiler who went 50ft into a ravine to save an injured dog trapped in a rising river for more than 18 hours has been hailed a hero.
Craig Tinney, 28, from Acharn, near Kenmore, was one of 22 villagers involved in the search for the six-year-old Labrador Crown.
Crown plunged into the gorge during a walk with owner Tony May on Monday.
Despite efforts by villagers, the dog was not rescued until Mr Tinney descended into the ravine on Tuesday.
Carol May, owner of the family pet, paid tribute to Mr Tinney's bravery and said he had managed to reach Crown in the nick of time.
She said: "The vet confirmed that Crown could not possibly have spent another night in the water.
"What everybody did for us, particularly Craig, is just wonderful."
Cliff face
Mrs May first became aware of the dog's disappearance on Monday evening.
She said: "My husband Tony was out walking our two black labs at the Falls of Acharn, as he always does.
"It was about 6pm and pitch black when he noticed Crown was missing. Tony immediately sensed he had gone off the cliff face."
I don't know how he did it but my family will be eternally grateful
Carol May
Friends and neighbours of the family turned out to help look for the dog but after four hours of trying the search was called off for the night.
On Tuesday morning, Mr Tinney who is an experienced abseiler and gorge walker, decided to lower himself into the ravine to find Crown.
He spotted the injured dog in the water and lowered himself down.
Eventually, after calming the animal and checking his injuries, he was able to lift the dog out.
Mrs May said: "By some super-human effort Craig managed to climb back up the cliff while he was holding onto Crown.
"I don't know how he did it but my family will be eternally grateful."
Crown was immediately taken to a local vet, who confirmed he had dislocated a hip.
He is expected to make a full recovery.

Halloween Safety Tips for your Pets
Don't leave your pet out in the yard on Halloween: There are plenty of stories of pranksters on this night.
Trick-or-treat candies are not for pets: Chocolate is poisonous to a lot of animals. Tin foil and candy wrappers can be hazardous if swallowed.
Be careful of pets around a lit pumpkin: Pets may knock it over and cause a fire. Curious kittens especially run the risk of getting burned.
Don't dress the dog in costume unless you know he loves it. Otherwise, it puts a lot of stress on the animal.
If you do dress up your dog, make sure the costume isn't constricting, annoying or unsafe. Be careful not to obstruct their vision and get your dog used to wearing his/her costume before the actual date of Halloween.
All but the most social dogs should be kept in a separate room during trick-or-treat visiting hours; many strangers in strange garb can be scary for a dog.
Be careful your cat or dog doesn't dart out through the open door.
Walk your dog early in the night, before it gets dark.
Have a fun, safe and Happy Halloween from Halloween is Here!

Author of Harry Potter Books GIves large Donation

JK Rowling has named the greyhound 'Sapphire'
Harry Potter author JK Rowling has provided a magical new home for a rescued dog in Fife.
Celia Fernie, who runs Greyhound Rescue near Kinghorn, said she had no idea who the customer was until she handed over a signed cheque.
The new family member, called Sapphire, is in addition to the author's Jack Russell terrier Butch.
Mrs Fernie said she had asked the whole family to come to the rescue centre to ensure they could provide a good home.
Generous offer
She asked Ms Rowling for a standard contribution of £30. However the author made out a cheque for £1,000.
"She was just a lovely person. We were chit-chatting and she was saying that other members of her family had dogs. They were just a very nice family," said Mrs Fernie.
The money has been used to provide veterinary help for some of the rescue centre's residents.
The pet rehoming service was established in 2005 and is celebrating providing a new family for its 100th dog. News

Greyfriar Bobby loyal to his master even after death
Friends: everytime I read about this story it brings tears to my eyes . Even after his best friend had died he refused to leave his side come rain or shine he laid there near him. His friends grave was now his home and he was happy til the day he died just to be near his friend. This little dog was truely loyal to his master and ppossed a love that would not die even after his master and friend had gone to their grave. Here I shall tell you a bit of what I know about the story of this little dog whos love for his friend and master went beyond death... John Gray died on February 8, 1858 in Edinburgh, Scotland, leaving very little behind except for a little Skye terrier named Bobby. The day after the burial, the curator noticed Bobby lying on the fresh mound of dirt. He immediately chased the little dog away, but the next day he was back. Again, the curator chased him day, but on the third day-despite the cold and the rain-Bobby was back. Finally, the curator took pity on the poor dog and allowed him to stay.
For the next fourteen years, Bobby kept constant watch over his owner's grave, rarely leaving except to take his noontime meal at exactly one o'clock. After a while, he came to be known as Greyfriars Bobby, after the cemetery in which his master was buried.
Bobby outlasted his master by fourteen years. When he died, he was buried just inside the gate at Greyfriars Kirkyard. He could not be buried with his master because it was consecrated ground. His headstone reads, "Greyfriars Bobby - died 14th January 1872 - aged 16 years - Let his loyalty and devotion be a lesson to us all."
Greyfriars Bobby may be gone, but he has not been forgotten. Shortly after his passing, a statue was resurrected in his honor. His story was also passed down and eventually a fictional version of the tale was published in a book titled Greyfriars Bobby by Eleanor Atkinson. In 1961, the book was made into a movie titled Greyfriars Bobby: The True Story of a Dog. Another movie was released in 2006 titled The Adventures of Greyfriars Bobby and starred Oliver Golding and Christopher Lee.

Dog stabbed 55 times

A man has been arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty after a dog was stabbed 55 times in an attack in Brighton.
The American bulldog was found dead in undergrowth in Moulsecoomb Wild Park at about 1300 BST on Wednesday.
RSPCA inspector Tony Pritchard said the wounds were "way beyond what you would do in self-defence".
Mr Pritchard said police were following a theory that a woman had possibly been attacked by a dog, and then another person came and killed it.
"That dog was very nearly decapitated by the severity of the blows to the neck. That's not self defence, nor is hiding the body in the undergrowth," he added.
'Silver shoes found'
Souce: THe World wide web
The animal welfare inspector said an anonymous caller told police that a woman was seen running from the undergrowth between midday and 1300 BST.
The caller also claimed a man was later seen pulling up in a white van and entering the bushes where the dog's body was found.
Stuffing from a coat was found at the scene, along with two silver shoes, Mr Pritchard said.
He added that there were drag marks on the ground, which was covered in blood.
'Get in touch'
A witness appeal has gone out to three other women in their 30s, who were seen walking a dog in the park earlier that day, between 0930 and 1000 BST.
Mr Pritchard said it would be "very useful to talk to these women about anything they may have seen" and urged them, or anyone who knows them, to "get in touch".
One had purple hair in a bob cut, the second had very short brown hair, and the third had curly brown hair.
The dog was not microchipped or wearing a collar and its owner has not been traced.

Man jailed for starving animals
A man jailed for allowing animals to starve to death has been given another six-month prison sentence.
Lee Howard, 41, was jailed last year for leaving horses, dogs, hens and a rabbit to die at Bank Top Stables in Trimdon, County Durham.
At Middlesbrough Magistrates' Court he admitted breaching an order banning him from keeping animals for life.
Magistrates heard RSPCA inspectors found dogs and birds at a house in Middlesbrough months after his release.
Howard, of Shinwell Crescent, South Bank, admitted causing unnecessary suffering to dozens of animals at the run-down stables in March 2006.
Breach reported
RSPCA inspectors found 13 horses and ponies, 11 hens, four dogs and a rabbit had died of dehydration and starvation. Three dogs survived.
But despite the jail term and ban Howard acquired 11 dogs and 16 birds on release from prison, the court heard.
The breach was discovered after a concerned member of the public reported the animals being kept at a property in Delarden Road, Middlesbrough, in January this year.
RSPCA Inspector Garry Palmer, speaking after the case, said: "That he has managed to acquire so many animals in such a short time is shocking, and poses questions about where he's got them from, and what kind of checks should be made."

Stray dog saves Abandoned Baby from certain Death

A stray dog saved an abandoned baby from certain death in freezing temperatures in Romania.
The hound stood guarding the child and barking and howling in a public park until it alerted passers-by to investigate.
They heard the child's cries and found the baby girl hidden in a plastic bag under a picnic table. The baby is recovering in hospital - and the maternity unit has adopted the stray dog.
Doctors say the newborn would most likely have died from hypothermia very quickly unless the stray dog hadn't discovered her.
The umbilical cord was still attached. She was taken to a hospital from Oradea in Arad county.
Dr Gheorghe Tirla said: "It is a normal baby-girl of three kilos. She was lucky with that dog or she could have frozen to death.
"She hadn't even had the umbilical cord severed but everything turned out fine and she is now recovering."
The baby is going to be placed in an orphanage, reports the National newspaper.
Police are trying to find the mother of the baby. Source: Annanova
