Keep your Dog Safe for the Holidays

My dear loyal readers nd friends: Sorry I have been away for fo long but its this old computer of mine it crashes when it wants to and I cannot afford to get a tech to fix it so I have to do it myself and it took me this long to get it working again But I hope you all still stoppped by to visit with me here and read some of my older posts and checked out the ads. Please be patient and bear with me when this happens I will do my best to get this old computer up and working again until the end lets not hope it gets to that.. Anyway Im so happy to be back with you all and lets hope I can remain . For these dogs depend on me to blog for them and all you dog lovers and dog people depend on me to continue to give you doggie tips and share my dog stories with you and doggie poems and dog pictures and dog news and funny stories also, so now let me share these tips about keeping your dog safe for the holidays. and I do wish all of you Happy Holidays.......
The holidays are all about family, friends, fun and food - but sometimes it's easy to forget about holiday safety for your dog. We all want our dogs to be part of the celebration, but there are some important guidelines to follow. Keep your dog safe this holiday season - no one wants their holiday celebration to end up at the veterinary emergency clinic!

No table scraps! Just because we humans like to indulge in the feast does not mean it is good for our dogs. Rich, fatty foods can seriously upset your dog's stomach and even be toxic. It is especially important to keep your dog away from the following dangerous foods:

•Onions, which can cause anemia                                                                                                          

•Chocolate

•Bones (especially cooked bones and ANY poultry bones)

•Alcoholic beverages

•Any foods high in fat, sodium and/or sugar

There are some human foods that are okay for dogs, so if you want to give Max or Maggie a special treat you have some options. Try a small piece of cooked turkey or chicken without skin or bones (and hold the gravy). Raw carrots and apples in moderate amounts are actually healthy for dogs. Just remember - everything in moderation.

Watch the holiday decorations! Most dogs are curious by nature, so they will want to check out any additions to the decor. Sniffing can lead to chewing, or even ingestion of foreign objects. Keep electrical cords tucked away and other decorations or holiday plants out of reach. Watch out for dangling objects that can be pulled down and cause injury. Candles should never be left unattended. Also, if you have a Christmas tree, don't let your dog drink the tree water - it can make her sick.
Don't let your dog get lost in the shuffle. Holiday parties and gatherings can mean lots of commotion. This might be fun for you, but not for your dog. Lots of people in your home can result in injury or stress for your dog. A large crowd is not the place for most dogs, so consider keeping her in a crate or quiet room - especially if she is the nervous type. If she is comfortable around a smaller group, just make sure you set down the ground rules with your company: don't feed the dog and keep the doors closed! Many pets get loose and run off during the holiday season. Though your dog should always wear a collar with current identification, this is especially important during the holiday season. Sadly, many dogs run off and become lost during the holiday season. don't let yours be one of them.

You and your dog can still enjoy the holiday season. Be sure to watch for any signs of illness and keep the vet's number handy. Stay safe and have fun. Happy Holidays. Dog Home Remedies you can find in your home

Many of these natural home remedies for dogs are quite easy to obtain. For example, do you have garlic in your kitchen? Most people do and use it to cook up tasty dishes but never consider that it is an effective flea repellant.

What about mineral oil, olive oil or almond oil? These are also common household items that can be used for a variety of different purposes. Did you know that they are also effective for treating ear infections or ear mites in dogs?

Epsom salts are excellent additives if your dog has problems with his feet. Just add a bit to some water and then soak your dog's feet. Remember to take care that he does not drink the water.

A Dog missing from his family for 9 years is finally home

A German shepherd named Astro who has been missing from his family for more than 9 years is finally home.
The Geary family was shocked when they recently received a call from an animal control officer who said that Astro had been found.
The Geary's adopted Astro, an 80-pound black and off-white German shepherd, about 9 years ago from the Treasure Coast Humane Society near Port St. Lucie, Fla. A month later, Astro went missing.

Since then, the family moved three times and ended up in Louisville, Ky.
On Jan. 29, 2009, an animal control officer in Tennessee picked up Astro after receiving a report about a dog running loose. Officers tracked down the family through a microchip implanted in the canine when he was adopted.
Dennis Geary says he wasn't sure if Astro would remember him. But when they were reunited, the dog sat down and began licking him.
"It's still a real shock that he is actually here," his wife Linda Geary told TCPalm.com about having the family's dog back. "We are getting used to the fact that we don't know where he has been or who had him, but he's our dog and has always been our dog."
It's now been three weeks since the pooch has been home. Even though Astro was gone for so long, Dennis says he's never forgotten him — all these years he kept Astro's picture in his wallet.

Get Rid of Fleas and Please Donate to Save the Dogs

Another Quick tip for Fleas: Give your pet a bath in dawn dish-washing liquid the fleas die quickly.Also mix some in a sprayer to spray infested area`s they die to. Add about 50/50 of dawn and water and work up a lather and leave it on your dogs for about 5 minutes and then rinse if you use a white towel to dry them with you can actually see the dead fleas on the towel. This home remedy works. Be sure not to get any soap in the dogs eyes. I also wanted to ask that you open your hearts and give a small donation to help Save the dogs. Police dog ends home gas threat

Police dog ends home gas threat
A police dog carrying a camera helped officers save a man who filled his home with gas and threatened to blow it up.

Gloucestershire Police sent Jedi, the German shepherd, into the property in Edway Parade, Gloucester, on Wednesday.

The man had told police that if they tried to get into the house he would ignite the gas.

Instead Jedi was sent in to find out where the man was and video footage collected allowed officers to swoop and arrest the 36-year-old.

He was arrested on suspicion of making threats to commit criminal damage with the intent to endanger life.

Gas supply

The man was taken to Gloucester's Royal Hospital for treatment for minor cuts.

On arrival at the house, police discovered the gas supply inside had been left on for some time.

Neighbours were evacuated and the gas supply to the house was cut off.

The video footage collected by the camera strapped to Jedi's back allowed officers to swoop and arrest the man at about 0330 BST.

Oldest dog Bella the Labrador dies - aged 29

A dog believed to be the oldest in the world has died, aged 29 years.

Bella, a Labrador cross, was bought by David Richardson from the RSPCA, 26 years ago when she was three years old.

She had lived with Mr Richardson, 76, and his partner Daisy, 81, since 1982 in Clay Cross, Derbyshire.

But she was put down on Saturday following a heart attack while on holiday with the couple.

Until Bella the record for the oldest dog was held by Butch, a 28-year-old from America who died in 2003, according to the Guinness World Records. Officially, the oldest ever dog was Bluey, a sheepdog from Australia, who lived to 29.

Although Mr Richardson, from Clay Cross, has no official documentation to prove Bella's age, he insists she was 29.

"We had just come up to Mablethorpe – we always go to the same place on holiday because we can take the dogs," said Mr Richardson.

"We had barely been here for an hour when Bella started panting and yelping and collapsed in front of the sofa.

"We took Bella to the vet but she was so ill she had to be put to sleep. It was very upsetting. We will miss her a lot.

"Lots of people came to see us and to wish Bella goodbye. Our friends and neighbours were very fond of her,

The RSPCA does not hold records stretching back to when Mr Richardson bought Bella and the Guinness World Records says Bella could not have been included because their was no documentation. Source:Guinness World Records
