Although there may be laws on animal cruelty, its not highly implemented. Thus every year, there are several animals, including pets like cats and dogs, and wild animals, that are maltreated.



Animal cruelty can come in various forms. You could have observed someone physically hurting an animal. Animal cruelty can also be in the form of malnutrition when animal owners don’t feed their pets properly. Generally, what causes injury and suffering to an animal can be considered animal cruelty.
One way of fighting animal abuse is to report it as soon as it is spotted. Here are some things you can do to prevent animal cruelty.
Be Aware
Keep your eyes and ears open. Your local humane society or animal shelter wouldn’t know several instances of animal abuse without those concerned citizens who report cruelty in their neighborhood through phone calls. So, do your part and be on the look out for animals in your own neighborhood. This could be a possible indicator of neglect or abuse.
Learn to Distinguish Animal Cruelty
Signs and Symptoms – There are signs and symptoms observed in most abused animals. Watch out for wounds on the body, patches of missing hair, extremely thin and starving animals, limping and tick or flea infestations. An owner who is physically abusing an animal is abusive. Dogs left chained in the yard and without access to food and water is a neglectful act. Animals hit by a car and not taken to a veterinarian is also a neglectful act. These are all forms of animal cruelty.
Report Animal Cruelty
Know who to call when reporting animal cruelty. There are some states that have Humane Law Enforcement officers who can investigate and arrest perpetrators of animal cruelty. In some towns, you may have to call the police department or local animal control. Know who to call. Also, when reporting an incident, make sure that you provide as much information possible. The details will mean a lot to the investigating officer. Try writing down the type of cruelty you witnessed, who was involved, the date of the incident, and where it happened.
Do Some Proactive Steps to Fight Animal Cruelty
Animal cruelty is a crime. Write or call your local law enforcement departments and tell them that investigating animal cruelty should be a main concern. Fight for the passage of strong anti-cruelty laws on federal, state or local levels. Have signature petitions. Write letters to legislators. Stronger laws mean tougher penalties, and punishment for animal cruelty should be harsher! Support your local animal rescue organization or local shelter. Volunteer at animal shelters and rescue groups in your area.
Lastly, set a good example for others. You can prevent animal cruelty and it starts within you. If you are a pet owner, make sure that you always show your pets the love and care that they ought to have. Always provide food, fresh water, shelter and medical treatment if your pet is sick. Have your animals spayed or neutered. Be a responsible pet owner. And to top it off, a lot of hugs and kisses won’t hurt!

Technically it’s not even summer yet but it definitely feels like it is. The heat and humidity is already making me cranky and uncomfortable but my adorable French bulldog, Smuckers, has it way worse—he starts panting the minute I take him outside lately. Dog Home Remedies- How to kill Fleas with Dawn or Salt or Lysol

Dawn. To kill fleas in carpeting, pour one tablespoon Dawn Dishwashing Liquid into a sixteen-ounce trigger-spray bottle. Fill the rest of the bottle with water, shake well, and spray the carpet, upholstery and the floors. The soap dries up the insects, killing them almost instntly. Avoiding Injuries To The Puppy & Your Child



Children around the age of 7 years and younger have the tendency to get excited when faced with new situations and experiences. This excitement may not be ideal when it comes to meeting a new puppy, or a dog of any age for that matter.



Excited behaviours such as making loud noises, chasing after the puppy, pulling at him, and other aggressive behaviours will result in the puppy getting scared.



In this situation, the puppy will more likely run away instead of letting the child pet him. A very young puppy will try to find his mum and hide under her, while a puppy around 12 weeks old will perceive these behaviours as either a threat or an aggressive play and will most likely react by nipping or jumping up.



The proper way of introducing your new pet to your child is through restraint and guidance. Your child should realise that the puppy is a baby and that your child should be gentle when handling him. To better teach your young ones how to be gentle, use a stuffed animal and teach her how to pet it properly. Practice this with your child for a few days before the puppy arrives home.

Girl choked to death on hot dog
A three-year-old Hampshire girl choked to death while eating a hot dog and chips at home, an inquest has heard.

Ruby Lea became unwell while having dinner with her five-year-old sister at their home in Redwood Grove, Havant, on 28 March.

Her father held her upside down and hit her on the back but she went "floppy".

The Portsmouth coroner David Horsley said the events could not have been foreseen or prevented. He recorded a verdict of accidental death.

The inquest heard on Tuesday that family friend Darryl Silver noticed Ruby had become quiet after her mother Joanne Lea had served the girls hot dogs in crusty rolls with chips.

He held her upside down and hit her on the back but she went all floppy

Ruby's father, Matthew Knight, then rushed to help his daughter.

Det Sgt Fiona Bitters, of Hampshire Police, said: "The children were talking and giggling while eating their dinner.

"Darryl noticed Ruby looking at him and he asked her 'Ruby, are you all right?'.

"At this point he realised something was really wrong and she might be choking - her mouth was open and she wasn't making any noise."

She added: "Matthew literally pulled Ruby out of her seat, turned her around, placed her face down on his knee and slapped her on the back several times to clear her airways.

"He held her upside down and hit her on the back but she went all floppy. Her face was grey and her lips blue."

Det Sgt Bitters told the inquest that a neighbour trained in first aid came to the family's aid and began to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the youngster.

Ruby was later taken to the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham, Portsmouth, where medics tried to resuscitate her.

Dangling dog rescued from ledge

It makes me feel good to read stories like this one that show people who care enough to get involed and help to save a dog.
Firefighters in Bristol rescued a dog that had slipped from a window sill and was left dangling by its paws 50ft (15m) above the ground.
When crews arrived in the early hours of Friday they found a neighbour on a ladder supporting the dog's weight.
After assisting the neighbour, fire officers returned the dog to its owner of the second-floor flat, who was asleep in bed.
It is believed the window may have been open and the dog had slipped.
"Fortunately the dog, possibly a boxer cross, was uninjured in the ordeal," an Avon Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman

I came across this article and I thought Id share it with you all. Its about a topic that goes on everyday and more of us should think about and consider helping out....More people who rent houses are apartments should rent with people who have pets, this would keep them together and avoid the people having to get rid of their loyal companions whom they love or avoid having to pay so much pet deposit if they are lucky to find a place that accepts pets but they still have to pay an ourageous pet deposit.
Am pleased to say that after taking the initiative to advertise dogs accepted on our rental property, we have just signed up a new tenant for a year that was struggling to find somewhere as they have a dog.It means that I have to sort a fence out but we are pleased to have the place rented again with only one month dicontinuity of tenancy and glad to be able to at least help someone out with a home in this difficult times ..After this article was posted then a reply was also posted that said" Am pleased to say that after taking the initiative to advertise dogs accepted on our rental property, we have just signed up a new tenant for a year that was struggling to find somewhere as they have a dog.It means that I have to sort a fence out but we are pleased to have the place rented again with only one month dicontinuity of tenancy and glad to be able to at least help someone out with a home in this difficult times .So you see you can spread the word and in time who knows maybe their will be more places that will rent to people who own pets" Let's hope so anyway.. California Dog found _lost all the way from Saudi Arabia

CARLSBAD, Calif. - A "sweetheart" of a dog now in a California shelter may be really, really far from home. His microchip says the knee-high, light tan Saluki came from Saudi Arabia.
The neutered male dog brought to a Carlsbad animal shelter last week has an implanted microchip that was sold to the U.S. Military Training Mission, headquartered in Riyadh, said Lt. Dan DeSousa of San Diego County's Animal Services Department.
The dog was found June 15 near Escondido, about 30 miles north of San Diego.
DeSousa said he believes someone in the military owns the dog and likely brought him from overseas. But they haven't been able to track down the owner, even after speaking with veterinarians who work with the U.S. military in Saudi Arabia.
"In our hearts and minds, we know this dog belongs to someone in the military. For all they've done for us, it is only fair we try to get the dog reunited," DeSousa said.
DeSousa said he doesn't know the dog's name but he wears a tag that reads "Pet Rejuvenizer." Plenty of people have said they would take him but authorities hope the real owner will come forward.
"There's a lot of unanswered questions, and dogs can't talk, so we're kind of restricted as to what information we can get out of him," DeSousa said, chuckling. "We're trying to put the word out. He is a sweetheart of a dog."

How to Train a Dog to Walk on a Leash

Training your dog to walk on leash can be frustrating for many dog owners. Pulling is one of the biggest problems, learn how to get your dog to walk on leash by watching this video and following the steps in this article.

Step 3.When your dog gets to the end of the leash you'll be walking in the other direction. As your dog comes to your side quickly praise your dog and gather up the leash.

Step 4.If your dog starts to pull, let out the leash again and go in the other direction.
Tips & Warnings
If you change direction every time your dog starts to pull, your dog will quickly learn that pulling is not pleasant. Your dog will learn that walking at your side is the best place to be....

How to Train your puppy to Pee outside

A puppy isn't born knowing that your carpet is not an acceptable place to relieve himself. You are going to have to show it the ropes and train the puppy to hold it until it's time for a walk outside or playtime in the backyard. Here's a relatively easy way to train him that doesn't require punishment.

Step 1. Watch your puppy's behavior while relieving himself outdoors so you can detect the warning signs and intercept him when indoors.

Step 2. Stay outside as often as possible during nice weather so your puppy can develop a preference for eliminating outdoors. Help him develop a liking for surfaces like dirt and gravel by taking him outdoors to eliminate after eating, playing and sleeping, or, ideally, every 15 minutes.

Step 3. When it's time, go straight to a predesignated area and don't leave until the puppy urinates.

Step 4. Tuck your puppy into a cozy crate in your bedroom at night. Dogs are den animals and don't like to soil the area where they sleep.

Step 5. Carry the puppy outdoors when he becomes restless in the middle of the night, and wait until he's finished relieving himself.

Step 6. Supply a litter box (filled with sand or kitty litter) during the night, unless you plan on getting up every couple of hours to take him outside. If you do want to take him outside, set your alarm if you sleep too deeply to notice that your puppy has started fidgeting, and carry him outside at those times.

Step 7. Carry the puppy outside first thing in the morning so he won't soil the floors as he walks outside.

Step 8. Be consistent with training. Consult a pet behaviorist if you have problems.

Step 9. Reward your dog with puppy treats and praise every time he successfully eliminates outdoors.

Leash Training for Adult Dogs

Leashes are wonderful things for dogs. Leashes mean getting to go out of the house and yard to all sorts of interesting places. Leashes mean enjoying the outside world, protected from myriad dangers. With a little training, your dog will happily greet the sight of the leash, and walk along on it easily without pulling.

Does this sound too good to be true? There's a trick to it! The hardest part is remembering to use the trick every single time you and your dog use the leash together. Once you form the habit, your dog will too.

It's a good idea to start with treats in the early stages, to develop the ability to bring the dog to your side with a minimum of effort and without stress to either of you. See Attention, Please! for those instructions. If your dog is still a puppy, you'll want to do the foundation training as noted in Leash Training for Puppies. The puppy leash training also applies with a timid dog who is afraid of the leash.

For competition training to heel in formal obedience, it's wise to continue the treats. The sport of obedience requires precise position and movement from the dog, and skillful treat training achieves such precision while keeping the dog happy.

Going for walks is not the same as obedience competition, though. Treats will help make walks into happy experiences for dogs who tend to be fearful, so don't hesitate to continue the treats if they seem to help at all. Observe your dog's body language to make sure the dog enjoys the walks as much as you do.

If you are training your dog for dog sports, you'll need a different word cue for recreational walking. The heel or other competition cue word means precision, and certain other things, depending on the sport involved. It also means full attention.

Walking down the street to exercise and socialize, you'll take your attention off your dog and allow the dog's attention to wander, too. So you need a cue for this walking that doesn't require full attention. It can be any word or phrase you like. You can also teach your dog one word cue for walking on your left and another for walking on your right side!

When the dog pulls on the leash, pressure on the dog can cause damage, no matter what type of collar you use. The constant pressure also reduces the dog's ability to feel your motions with the leash, resulting in the need for excessive pressure to restrain the dog if that should become necessary. This excessive pressure can cause temperament problems in some dogs.

Keeping a loose leash is really simple. All you have to do is react every time the leash goes tight. Don't try to determine when the dog is pulling. Instead, make it black and white by reacting whenever there is tension on the leash.

So here's what you do. Start out for your walk. Make sure your arm holding the leash is comfortably bent, elbow in to your side. Walking along with your arm extended is not a good control position for working a dog. The instant the leash goes tight use one of three options. 1) Stop -- works well for sensitive dogs and young puppies. 2) Back up -- works well for highly trained dogs. You can have the dog come to heel position from left or right directions (vary it), or take backward steps. 3) Quickly straighten your arm to create momentary slack in the leash, and step off abruptly in a new direction, taking a right turn or right-about turn.

With the third option, the dog may feel a slight pop on the leash, but will immediately realize that you made a move and the dog missed it. This doesn't feel unfair or upsetting to the dog, and gives the dog an easy way to prevent it from happening again, by simply paying more attention to your movements. Moving this way gives the dog something to DO, and you employ body language to clearly communicate what you need. You don't have to be athletic, either. Just a few quick steps are enough of a change of direction for even a large dog.

When the dog turns attention to you and moves to get back close to you, praise, praise, praise! And keep moving -- make yourself and your actions unpredictable enough and interesting enough that the dog has to make an effort to keep with you. Continue to generously praise the dog for this effort.

The loose leash needs to be your new habit, for all situations. Never stand there, or walk along, with the leash tight again. The dog will quickly think you WANT it tight if you go back to that habit, even after you've taught the dog to walk on a loose leash. It's so natural for the dog to pull when the leash is tight that most dogs, even trained dogs, will nearly always do it when someone tightens up on the leash. In fact, the dog may HAVE to pull on the leash when the leash is tight, to keep from being off balance.

It's really we humans who cause this problem because by holding the leash tight, we teach dogs that a tight leash is normal. That's why it is so quick to retrain a dog on this. And forever afterward, you'll have an easier dog!

When you get used to this handling, it's very good-natured and happy on your part, and the dog has a great time, too. You'll always need to react to a tight leash with some sort of change in direction for the life of the dog, but it becomes second nature. You won't look foolish to the neighbors, you'll look fantastic.

The World’s First Commercially Cloned Dog Arrives

BioArts International announced today that they have delivered the world’s first commercially cloned dog, a 10-week old Labrador named Lancey, to Florida residents Edgar and Nina Otto.
“We can’t believe this day is finally here,” said Nina Otto, “We are so happy to have little Lancey in our family. His predecessor was a very special dog. We are thrilled beyond words!”
Lancey was hand delivered to the Ottos on Monday, January 26th by BioArts Chairman Lou Hawthorne. “This is a very special milestone for our company – and great fun for me too,” said Hawthorne, who delivered Lancey personally.
The Ottos were one of five families to bid and win an auction held by BioArts International in July for a chance to clone their family dog. Lancey’s genetic donor, Sir Lancelot, died in January, 2008, and the Ottos had his DNA stored. By October, samples from the original dog were on their way to the Sooam Biotech Research Foundation in Seoul, South Korea, which provides cloning services to BioArts.
Lancey was born on November 18th, 2008, and brought to the US on January 25th, 2009 after being weaned from his surrogate mother.
The Ottos, longtime residents of Boca Raton, have had many beloved dogs over the years, but Lancey’s genetic donor was unique. “Sir Lancelot was the most human of any dog we’ve ever had,” said Otto, “He was a prince among dogs.”
Said Hawthorne, “One minute with Lancey and you know he’s special. He’s both extremely aware and very sweet. The Ottos are the first of six current clients to receive their clone. The next 6 months will be very exciting both for our clients and our staff.”

Star's lifeline for Indian strays

Stray dogs in India's financial capital, Mumbai (Bombay) should be sterilised not killed, says former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson.

Animal lover Ms Anderson intervened on the dogs' behalf in a letter to the city authorities.

"Dogs cannot use condoms but... they can be 'fixed' painlessly," she wrote.

The star learnt of the dogs' plight after Mumbai's High Court recently said strays should be killed as they were a "permanent nuisance" to the public.

'More humane'

"I was very concerned to learn from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) that dogs that live on the streets of Mumbai may be caught and cruelly destroyed.

"It is well established that killing stray dogs is not a permanent solution to controlling their populations," her letter to the municipal commissioner of Mumbai says.


Stray dogs are an issue across India

Referring to studies conducted by the World Health Organisation and the Animal Welfare Board of India, she said that "mass sterilisation of stray animals is the most viable solution to nuisance and health concerns in addition to being more humane".


"Dogs cannot use condoms, but with the municipality's help, they can be 'fixed' - painlessly, quickly and permanently," her letter states.

Animals rights activists say that as many as 70,000 strays in Mumbai and many more across the states of Maharashtra and Goa may be disposed of if the High Court's ruling goes ahead.

The decision has been stayed until the end of this month.

Anuradha Sawhney, from the animal protection group Peta, said that Ms Anderson got in touch with their US branch after reading about the court ruling in Mumbai.

Officials contacted by the BBC said that because the court decision had been stayed, no further action against stray dogs had been taken. They refused to comment about the letter.

Ms Sawhney said the solution lay in cleaning up the city and blocking canine feeding sources - most commonly found in rubbish.

Despite several sterilisation programmes, the population of strays has not been controlled.

There were mixed views about Ms Anderson's intervention among people in Mumbai.

Sales manager Shubhada Surve said: "Ethically it may not be right to kill dogs but who is Pamela Anderson to get involved in Mumbai's issues?

"There's no doubt that the stray dog problem is a major one and I don't think Pamela can really understand the gravity."

Medical professional Samir Guliyani, a cyclist, said "maybe killing is not the best way but stray dogs are a menace".

"The way they suddenly pounce on bike riders is dangerous. Something has to be done and they have to be off roads."

On the subject of Pamela herself, Mr Guliyani said: "She is hot but why is she writing to the municipal commissioner?"
